The world has become smaller and much more connected than ever before. It’s great because we can learn from each other and experience the beauty of other cultures. In this diverse society respecting other cultures is an important part of socialising and something that we need to teach our children. It seems like a confusing topic but there’s actually not a whole lot to it other than treating others the way you want to be treated and treating everyone equally, irrespective of their background. We’ve included some top tips from a senior school in Hertfordshire below.
Cultural Celebrations
Just as we have Christmas and other special occasions, other cultures and religions do too. Celebrations like Eid, Diwali, Hanukkah, and the Chinese New Year which are only a few to name. You can join in on the festivities, it’s a lovely way to learn about other cultures and show respect.

Go Travelling
You can also venture out of your local area and the country even to meet new people and cultures. Travelling gives you the chance to throw yourself in, gain new experiences
and appreciate the way of life that others follow. It can be really eye opening for some people as they are able to see that the world is much bigger than just their hometown and put everything into perspective.
Cultural Contributions and Everyday Life
If travelling isn’t for you, there are huge hubs of diversity and culture all around the UK from places like Chinatown to streets lined with restaurants offering Indian cuisine. They can give your child an insight without having to physically get on a plane. There are elements of different cultures all around us and taking a moment to recognise these can help children to appreciate their contributions.
These are just a few of the ways that you can teach your children to respect other cultures. You can find more parenting tips and guides that I post in my blog.
