University is the place where children really explore who they are, their passions and develop their independence. Getting into university, unlike the steps before, works slightly differently. To be considered for a place, your child will need to submit a detailed application consisting of a personal statement and all of their educational attainments. Following, they may even have to attend an interview to secure a place on the courses that have more competition. One of the top 10 sixth forms in London has shared some top tips below for getting into university.

Review

A personal statement holds a lot of weight in terms of an application. It summarises why your child wants to study a course at their university and their motivations. Mistakes can easily be made and just as easily omitted once spotted. This can be tricky though if you’re the only one looking at it. Getting others to review allows you to get a wide range of perspectives, gain quality feedback and improve.

Think About Your Insurance

When it comes to narrowing down their top 5 choices, your child will need to think carefully as they can only make two selections – Their first choice and their second choice. The reason that this should be carefully thought about is because if your child fails to secure a place at their “firm”/first choice they will need to be willing to commit themselves to their “insurance”/second choice otherwise they will need to reject their offers and apply for a course through clearing.

Attend Open Days

As your child can only apply to 5 courses at whichever universities they wish, they should not take their decisions lightly and try to visit where possible so that they can avoid any unexpected surprises later on. That way, they can also speak to student ambassadors and lecturers themselves to learn beyond what’s on the prospectus.
